MAWNAN PARISH COUNCIL - STRATEGY
Mawnan Smith, at the centre of the parish, was for years a staging post for shipping goods and produce across the Helford
River to the Lizard peninsula. The name of the village came from the four blacksmiths' "smithies" which were there for years.
Mawnan is at the centre of the four sub tropical gardens:
Glendurgan, Trebah, Carwinion and Penjerrick, gardens which attract thousands of tourists
and local visitors every year. There is an extensive network of public footpaths around the picturesque
coastal areas of the Helford River. Mawnan Smith village has a thatched roof pub, the Red Lion, a restaurant, iron monger and a general store, together
with two estate agents, hairdresser, chiropractor, doctor’s surgery and the Parish
Council Office.
The Memorial Hall is the hub of village activities promoting over four hundred and fifty separate
events including the summer craft market and the village show, both held annually.
Mawnan Parish enjoys many community activities: The Mawnan Community Association; Drama and
Panto Group; Friendship and Luncheon Clubs; Gardening Club; Mawnan Wives; Women’s Institute;
Brownies and Guides; Local History Group; Playgroup; Mums and Toddlers and Youth Clubs and
The Rendlesham Trust.
There is also a wide range of sporting clubs: Angling;
Bowling; Cricket; Football; Golf; Tennis; Swimming;
Judo; Gig Rowing; and Sailing.
Other recreational and sports events make use
of the Carwinion Trust’s sport’s amenities and the
Junior Playing Field.
The Parish Council provides services for, and manages and maintains the assets of Mawnan Parish, and sets itself high standards of governance. As an accredited Quality Council, the council has achieved the "kite mark" standard for the manner in which it operates.
It is vitally important to the local community that the parish continues to be sustainable, a fact which led to the production of the Parish Plan in 2006. Based upon extensive consultation within the community, the Mawnan Parish plan documented the strategic direction of the parish for the next 10 years.
Based upon the aspirations within the Parish Plan, members of the council elected to take on individual "portfolio" responsibilities, which are published in the list of Council Members. Council members have signed up to a Portfolio Holder Protocol, which determines their portfolio responsibilities.
In recent years the council has developed a number of other important strategies :-
| • |
Grants Procedures to ensure that any grant applications are considered professionally, so as to achieve
the maximum benefit to the residents of the parish. |
| • |
Statement of Intent on Training in which it commits to providing officers and members with the necessary training and development opportunities to ensure the Council can meet its aims and objectives. |
| • |
Community Engagement Strategy which aims to improve the way in which the council engages and consults its residents and partners on important issues.
|
| • |
|
With the transition from District/County councils to a the single Unitary Authority, it is likely that further responsibilities will be devolved to parish and town councils.
